Drug-Free Action Alliance Board of Directors is of composed a diverse group of individuals dedicated to the prevention of underage and high-risk drinking and illegal drug use. Their dedication and forward thinking helps Drug-Free Action Alliance achieve excellence in reaching its goals.
This month we explore with Drug-Free Action Alliance’s past president, Diahn Hevel of Hevel Consulting, and board member since 2002 why she chose to serve on the Board of Directors. Why did you choose to serve on Drug-Free Action Alliance’s board?
Back in 2002, I was looking for an opportunity to serve on a non-profit board where the mission had a personal significance for me and where there was sound fiscal and managerial governance. I found both with Drug-Free Action Alliance, Ohio Parents for Drug-Free Youth at the time. The organization has a strong strategic plan and has a history of consistent managerial and fiscal strength.
What aspects of its work and mission are the most important to you?
Two areas of focus I believe strongly in: 1) Education and advocacy with our state legislators and, 2) Supporting local coalitions with education, templates, tools and programs. I believe prevention efforts are most effective at a very local level and Drug-Free Action Alliance has a strong program to support local coalition excellence.
Have you gained personal benefits from this service?
I am much better equipped to articulate the case for supporting the prevention of youth alcohol and drug use. I am also personally and professionally enriched by the opportunity to serve in a variety of leadership roles throughout my board years, from committees to Secretary and President roles. |
